“Do you come to me, or do I bring the car to you?” is one of the questions we are asked most often. It is a fair one, and the honest answer is that the right method depends far more on the type of damage than on convenience. A roadside touch-up and a full workshop refurbishment are not two versions of the same job; they solve different problems, to different standards. This guide explains what mobile repair genuinely does well, where it runs into limits, and why we have chosen to work only from a fixed alloy wheel repair workshop.
What mobile alloy wheel repair actually covers
Mobile repair is built around one thing: cosmetic kerb damage. A technician arrives with a van, sands back a scuffed area, fills and primes it, colour-matches a small patch and blends in a top coat. On a light scuff to a painted wheel, done carefully, the result can be perfectly tidy. For a single scraped rim before a sale or a lease handover, it can be a sensible, quick option.
The important word is cosmetic. A driveway repair works on the surface of the wheel face and rim edge. It is not designed to measure whether the wheel still runs true, to reach corrosion spreading beneath the lacquer, or to restore a factory finish across the whole wheel. Those are different jobs, and pretending otherwise is where problems start.
What needs a workshop — and why
Several common repairs simply cannot be reproduced at the roadside, because they depend on fixed machinery, heat, or a clean, controlled environment.
- Wheel straightening. A buckle is corrected with hydraulic equipment and checked against a run-out measurement — how far the rim wanders from true as it turns. That measurement, and the tooling behind it, live in the workshop.
- Crack repair. Welding an alloy is a controlled process, and whether a crack can be repaired at all depends on its location and severity. This is a bench job following inspection, never a roadside one.
- Diamond cutting. The bright, machined face is produced by removing a fine layer of metal on a CNC lathe. There is a limit to how many times this can be done, and it needs the lathe — full stop.
- Powder coating and colour changes. The finish is applied as a powder and then cured in an oven at a set temperature. A driveway has neither the oven nor the dust-free space this demands.
- Corrosion and lacquer failure. Oxidation creeps under a damaged clear coat. Stopping it means stripping the wheel back to bare metal, treating the corrosion and refinishing — not sealing over it.
- Leak and pressure testing. After any structural work, the wheel is refitted, balanced and checked for a proper seal at the tyre bead. That equipment is fixed, too.
If a wheel needs a genuine full refurbishment rather than a cosmetic tidy-up, the strip, corrosion treatment, refinish and cure all have to happen under one roof, in the right order.
Two things a driveway can't control: finish and structure
Beyond the machinery, two practical factors sit behind our decision to stay workshop-based.
Finish durability
Coatings dislike moisture, dust and temperature swings while they cure. Refinish a wheel on a damp, gritty driveway in a British winter and you are fighting the conditions the whole time. A localised patch repair can also be hard to blend so that it stays invisible as the surrounding lacquer ages. A controlled environment is not a luxury here; it is the difference between a repair that lasts and one that lifts within a season.
Structural certainty
A wheel is a safety-critical component. Its condition affects tyre sealing, handling and how the car behaves at speed. MOT testers assess wheels and tyres for safety-related defects under the DVSA MOT inspection manual (axles, wheels, tyres and suspension), and damage that undermines structural integrity can be recorded as a serious defect. A cosmetic repair that hides a crack or a buckle does nothing about the underlying risk — it just makes it harder to see. When a wheel is on the bench, we can see the inner barrel as well as the face, measure run-out, reach corrosion properly, refinish and cure under control, then balance and test the wheel before it goes back on the car. That sequence lets us do something a roadside visit cannot: tell you honestly when a wheel is fine to refurbish, when it needs structural work, and when the safest and most sensible advice is replacement.
