Refurbished classic car alloy wheel restored to a period-correct finish

Classic cars aren’t just transport — they’re pieces of motoring history. Whether you’re preserving a cherished weekend cruiser, preparing a concours entry, or restoring a project car properly, the wheels matter as much as the bodywork. They influence how the car looks, how it drives, and how safe it is on the road.

At Mario’s Wheel Repair, we specialise in classic car wheel refurbishment across London and Essex. Our approach is simple: respect the original design, restore only what can be done safely, and never prioritise cosmetics over structure.

Safety comes first — always

Not every wheel should be refurbished. Every set is inspected individually for cracks, buckles, corrosion damage, previous repairs, and material limits. If a wheel falls outside safe refurbishment thresholds, we will recommend replacement — even if that means turning work away.

Why refurbish classic car wheels?

Over time, even well-kept classics suffer wheel deterioration. Common issues we see include:

Proper refurbishment restores appearance, improves drivability, and helps protect the long-term value of the vehicle — provided it’s done within safe structural limits.

What’s included in our classic wheel refurbishment process

1) Inspection & safety assessment

Every wheel undergoes a detailed inspection before any work begins. We check for cracks, run-out (buckles), bead-seat damage, corrosion pitting, and signs of previous welding or machining. This assessment determines whether refurbishment is appropriate or if replacement is the safer option.

2) Repair where appropriate

Where damage is within safe limits, we can carry out controlled wheel straightening or welding repairs. Repairs are refused if damage is located in high-stress load areas, if deformation is severe, or if the wheel has already reached its material limits.

3) Strip-back & surface preparation

Old paint, lacquer, corrosion, and contaminants are fully removed. Proper preparation is critical — it’s what determines how long the finish will last in real UK road conditions.

4) Period-correct finishing options

We advise on finishes that suit the era and use of your vehicle:

  • Powder coating (from £100 per wheel)
A durable, chip-resistant finish ideal for regularly driven classics and corrosion-prone wheels. Available in heritage and custom colours.
  • Diamond cut refinishing (from £120 per wheel)
CNC precision cutting followed by lacquer protection. Not all classic wheels are suitable — cut depth is limited and carefully monitored.
  • Ceramic ball polishing (from £245 per wheel)
A mirror-polished finish commonly chosen for show cars and high-end restorations. Best combined with careful maintenance.

5) Refit & balancing

Once refurbished, wheels are refitted and balanced to reduce vibration and protect tyres, suspension components, and steering feel.

Optional: Nitrogen tyre inflation

Available for £30 per set. Nitrogen helps maintain more stable tyre pressures over time and can improve consistency on vehicles that are driven infrequently.

Frequently asked questions

Can all classic car wheels be refurbished?

No. Not every wheel is suitable for refurbishment. Each wheel is inspected for cracks, buckles (run-out), corrosion damage, previous repairs, and material limits. If a wheel falls outside safe refurbishment thresholds, we will recommend replacement rather than cosmetic work.

Do you refurbish split rim and wire wheels?

Yes, where it is safe to do so. Split rims can be dismantled, cleaned, and resealed correctly, and wire wheels can be assessed for spoke condition and hub integrity. Some wheel types or conditions may be unsuitable for refurbishment, and we will advise you after inspection.

Is wheel welding safe on classic wheels?

Welding can be safe when carried out within strict limits and only in appropriate areas of the wheel. We refuse welding for cracks in high-stress or load-bearing areas, where structural integrity is compromised, or where previous repairs make the wheel unsafe.

Can buckled wheels be straightened on a classic car?

Often, yes — if the buckle is within safe repair limits. We can correct certain buckles to reduce vibration and improve drivability. Severe deformation, multi-point damage, or wheels that fail safety checks may require replacement.

Can you match original or period-correct colours and finishes?

Where possible, we aim to match original or period-correct finishes using manufacturer references, historical finish guidance, and colour standards such as RAL. Exact matching depends on wheel material, age, and condition, and we will advise if a close alternative is more appropriate.

What finish is best for a classic car?

It depends on how the car is used and the original wheel style. Powder coating is popular for regularly driven classics due to durability. Diamond cut finishes can suit certain OEM designs but have machining limits. Ceramic polishing is often chosen for show-focused restorations and requires careful maintenance.

Can diamond cut wheels be refurbished multiple times?

No. Diamond cut wheels have a finite number of safe cuts because each refurbishment removes material from the wheel face. If a wheel is already close to its machining limit, further diamond cutting is not advised — even if it could be made to look good.

Can you polish wheels without painting them?

Yes. Ceramic ball polishing produces a paint-free, mirror-like finish that is commonly chosen for show cars and classic restorations. This finish prioritises appearance and requires careful cleaning and protection, which we will explain before work begins.

Will refurbished wheels be as strong as new?

Refurbishment improves appearance and usability but does not make a damaged wheel brand new. Structural safety is assessed based on the wheel’s condition at the time of inspection, and only repairs within safe tolerances are carried out.

Are refurbished classic wheels safe for regular driving?

If a wheel passes inspection and the repair is within safe limits, it can be suitable for road use. However, cosmetic refurbishment does not correct structural damage that falls outside safe thresholds. We assess each wheel individually and will advise the safest option.

How long does classic wheel refurbishment take?

Turnaround time depends on wheel condition, the type of repair required, and the finish selected. Many refurbishments take several days. More complex repairs or specialist finishes may take longer and will be confirmed after inspection.

What affects the cost of refurbishing classic wheels?

Pricing depends on wheel size, corrosion level, type of damage, previous repairs, and the finish selected. All pricing is confirmed after a physical inspection, as some issues only become visible once the wheel is assessed properly.

Do you offer a warranty on refurbished wheels?

Yes. We provide a workmanship warranty, subject to normal use and care. Impact damage, road hazards, misuse, and neglect are excluded. We also provide aftercare guidance to help your finish last longer.

What happens if my wheels cannot be safely refurbished?

If a wheel cannot be refurbished safely, we will explain why and recommend suitable alternatives, including replacement options. Safety is prioritised over cosmetic improvement.
