Toyotas arrive at our Grays workshop for a slightly different reason from most makes. They are not, as a rule, cars that get driven hard into kerbs. They are cars that cover a great deal of mileage in exactly the environment that wears wheels down slowly — dense urban driving, tight parking, repeated kerb contact at low speed and a steady diet of poorly maintained road surfaces. The Corolla and Prius have a substantial presence in private hire work across London, and a car doing that kind of mileage accumulates rim damage in a way a weekend car never will.

What that means in practice is that Toyota wheels tend to come in with several small problems rather than one dramatic one: a set of tired rim lips, lacquer beginning to lift at the edge of a machined face, and one wheel that met something harder than the others. Most of it refinishes well. Some of it does not, and the difference is rarely visible from the outside of the wheel.

What we see on Toyota wheels

Corolla — accumulated kerb damage rather than single impacts

The current Corolla is offered as a hatchback and a Touring Sports estate, and the higher trims sit on 17 and 18-inch wheels with noticeably less tyre sidewall than the base cars. Sidewall is what absorbs an impact before it reaches the rim, so the same kerb that leaves a 16-inch wheel unmarked can put a flat spot on the rim lip of an 18-inch one. On the higher-mileage Corollas we see, the damage is usually cumulative — a rim lip that has been scuffed repeatedly over a couple of years rather than in one incident. That is normally cosmetic and repairs well, but it does mean the finish has often been breached in several places, and moisture has had time to get underneath it.

Yaris and Yaris Cross — small wheels, tight urban work

The Yaris spends most of its life in town, which is where kerbs are. It runs smaller wheels than the rest of the range, and the extra sidewall does absorb a fair amount, so we see proportionally fewer bends on the Yaris than on the larger Toyotas. What we do see is rim lip scuffing and, on the Yaris Cross with its larger diameters and shorter profiles, the occasional pothole bend on the inner rim. RAV4 — weight is the variable that matters

The RAV4 is the Toyota where mass changes the assessment. The plug-in version carries a significantly larger battery than the standard hybrid and is meaningfully heavier as a result, and that additional weight has to be dealt with by the same four wheels. It does not make the wheels weak. It does mean an impact that a lighter car might survive with nothing worse than a scuff can leave a structural mark on a heavier one. When a plug-in RAV4 comes in after a pothole strike, structural condition is the first thing we establish, not the finish.

Finishes: painted, machined and two-tone faces

Toyota has used painted, powder-coated and machined two-tone faces across the range, and the finish changes what a repair involves. A painted or powder-coated wheel can generally be prepared, repaired and refinished as a single unit. A machined or diamond-cut style face is different: the bright surface is produced by removing a very thin layer of metal on a lathe, and once the lacquer over it is breached, moisture works underneath and the face begins to cloud and lift from the edge inwards. What we do with Toyota wheels

All of the work happens in our own workshop, which means each wheel gets what it actually needs rather than whatever a single process can manage: wheel straightening for bends and buckles, crack welding where the crack sits somewhere that permits it, diamond cutting, powder coating and full wheel refurbishment. Every wheel is inspected first, stripped where the work requires it, then repaired, refinished and balanced before it goes back on the car.

One practical point comes up more often on Toyotas than on most makes, and it follows directly from the mileage they cover. Owners of high-mileage cars are more likely to buy a used replacement wheel than a new one, and the fixing patterns used across the mainstream Toyota range are shared widely enough that wheels from other models — and other manufacturers — will physically bolt on. A wheel that fits is not automatically a wheel that suits the car. If you have sourced a second-hand replacement, it is worth having the load rating, offset and structural condition checked rather than assuming it is a straight swap.

Vibration after an impact

If a new vibration has appeared through the steering or the seat after hitting something, a buckle is one possible cause among several. Tyre damage, displaced balance weights and worn suspension components can all produce similar symptoms, which is why we measure rather than assume. Straightening is carried out in controlled stages and checked against runout — how far the wheel moves away from a true path as it rotates — and it is only appropriate where the wheel can be brought back within safe limits. Cracks

Cracks are far less common than scuffs and bends on this range, but they matter a great deal more. A cracked alloy wheel should be inspected before the car is driven any further, particularly where it is also losing pressure. Whether a crack can be repaired depends on its location, length and direction, on whether the wheel has been welded before, and on what else the impact did to the surrounding metal. Some cracks fall outside safe repair limits, and we will say so rather than tidy the wheel up and send it back out.

When we would recommend replacement instead

We would normally recommend replacing a wheel where a crack sits in a high-stress area, where there is deformation at several points around the rim, where previous repairs have already consumed the available material, or where the structural margins remain uncertain after inspection. Wheel condition forms part of the MOT assessment (DVSA MOT inspection manual), though the more important consideration is the everyday one. On a high-mileage car in particular, there is a real temptation to make a marginal wheel look presentable and carry on. That is the situation in which we are most likely to refuse the work. Can a kerbed Corolla alloy be repaired?

In most cases, yes. Kerb scuffing along the rim lip and the spoke ends is the most common damage we see on the Corolla, and on a structurally sound wheel it refinishes well. We still check the inner rim and the bead seating area first, because the outer face of a wheel tells you very little about what the impact did to the inside.

My Corolla has a two-tone machined face that has gone cloudy at the edges. Can it be re-cut?

Sometimes. A machined or diamond-cut face can be re-cut where enough material remains and the corrosion has not travelled far beneath the lacquer. Where it has spread under the bright surface, a powder-coated finish is usually the more durable answer. We confirm which route is appropriate once the wheel has been stripped and inspected.

Does the hybrid battery change how you assess a RAV4 or Yaris wheel?

The repair processes are the same, but heavier vehicles put more energy through a rim in an impact. That matters most on the plug-in RAV4, which is appreciably heavier than the petrol version. On those we spend longer establishing structural condition before discussing any cosmetic work.

I hit a pothole in my Yaris and the steering now vibrates. Is the wheel bent?

It might be, but vibration has several possible causes. Tyre damage, displaced balance weights and suspension or brake components can all produce similar symptoms, so the wheel and tyre should be checked rather than assumed. If you are also losing pressure, have it looked at before driving any distance.

My Corolla is used for private hire and needs to look presentable. Can you refurbish all four?

Yes, and on a high-mileage car that is often the sensible approach. Where several wheels have been kerbed over time, refinishing the set gives a consistent result rather than leaving one bright wheel next to three weathered ones. Structural condition is still assessed wheel by wheel first.
